New Delhi, Aug 11: Congress MP Sunil Jakhar on Saturday accused Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of distracting people from the Rafale fighter jet deal ‘scam’. Talking to news agency ANI, Jakhar said, “National security isn’t child’s play. BJP govt is trying to distract people from this issue. To emphasise this point, we wanted to draw their attention with help of a so-called replica of Rafale fighter jets. Won’t let Modi government play with national security.”

Earlier, Congress MP had said that this deal will end up in arbitration, which will be the biggest arbitration case after the one on the Bhopal gas tragedy. “I can make a better Rafale (fighter aircraft), please give me the contract”, he said.

On August 7, the Congress had demanded a JPC probe into the Rafale fighter jet deal with France, alleging that the change of terms and conditions of the previous agreement negotiated by the then UPA government had caused a loss to the exchequer. The demand for the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe was raised by party leader K.C. Venugopal in the Lok Sabha during a debate on the first batch of supplementary demands for grants for 2018-19.

Later, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge also repeated the demand, saying the Modi government had not replied to the points raised by Venugopal and had “accepted” what he said.

Last month, Congress President Rahul Gandhi had said that the French president had clearly conveyed to him that there was no problem in sharing details relating to the Rafale contrary to what the government has been saying and that the “Defence Minister has clearly spoken an untruth”.

Later,  France issued a statement saying that a security agreement it concluded with India in 2008 legally binds the two countries to protect the classified information relating to operational capabilities of defence equipment.
