New Delhi, June 1: Even as the BJP reels under the shock of losing both the by-polls in UP; for Kairana Lok Sabha seat and Noorpur Assembly seat, there is no need for political analysts to wrack their brains for reasons. If this UP Minister is to be believed, it was the summer vacations which led to his party’s failure in retaining these two seats. UP Minister for Dairy Farming, Culture and Minority Welfare Laxmi Narayan Chaudhary said today that for the voter, by-poll isn’t the same as the general elections. Explaining the BJP’s dismal performance, Chaudhary said by-polls cannot be treated like the general elections to which the electorate gives more importance. “More people take part in the latter (general elections). Our supporters and voters had gone with their children for summer holidays so we lost those two seats of Kairana and Noorpur,” he said.

The BJP lost the Kairana seat to RLD candidate Tabassum Hassan who had the backing of a united Opposition; Congress, SP, BSP and even AAP. The saffron party had fielded Mriganka Singh, the daughter of Hukum Singh, party MP whose death had necessitated this by-poll.

Noorpur by-poll was held because sitting BJP MLA Lokendra Singh died in a road accident in February. This seat too was wrenched out of BJP’s hands and SP’s Naim ul Hassan won from here.
