New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) politician Moushumi Chatterjee stoked up a controversy at an event as she advised a woman anchor to try ‘saree’ and not pants.
“Aap yeh kapde pehen ke aaye ho, yeh kapde sahi nahin hai. Aapko ya to saree ya dress (kurta-churidar) pehen ke aana chahiye (The clothes you are wearing are not appropriate. You should have either worn a saree or salwar kameez for the event,” the BJP leader told the anchor during a press conference at a Surat hotel, as quoted by The Indian Express.
The leader, however, came out in defence of her statement. Terming it ‘an advice’, she said, “As a woman, I have all the right to teach the youth what they should wear, where and when.” She also claimed that the ‘advice’ to the woman was as a mother and not as a BJP leader.
Meanwhile, the anchor has not released any statement in connection with the incident.
Veteran actor Moushumi Chatterjee was last seen in Amitabh Bachchan and Deepika Padukone-starrer Piku in 2015. The 70-year-old joined the BJP on January 2 in presence of senior leaders including BJP General Secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya.
She had contested the 2004 Lok Sabha Elections on Congress ticket from Kolkata north-east seat, but lost.
