Murshidabad: A boat capsized in Murshidabad’s Domkal on Thursday evening around 8 pm. Since then several people have gone missing while some of them have been rescued. The exact number of people who have either rescued or have been missing cannot be ascertained yet.
A rescue operation is underway with the district police taking stock of the situation. A search operation has been initiated in the Bhairav river where the tragic incident took place. The boat was en route Dobapara from Garibpur.
Local boatmen are also searching for other missing people.
On Wednesday, at least three persons drowned and at least 11 others went missing after an overloaded motorised country boat capsized in the Brahmaputra river near here after hitting a rock. Ten passengers were rescued, while 12 others managed to swim to safety said Kamrup Deputy Commissioner Kamal Kumar Baishya.
The boat which had 36 people onboard was on its way to north Guwahati in Kamrup district across the river from Fancy Bazar when its engine developed a technical snag and hit a rock near the bank of Ashwaklanta Temple. The boat was carrying 18 motorcycles illegally and only 22 passengers onboard had valid tickets, said Baishya, who is supervising the rescue operations at the site.
