Jhunsi (Uttar Pradesh), Mar 31: Some unidentified miscreants on Saturday damaged a statue of Dalit icon Dr BR Ambedkar in Allahabad’s Jhunsi. The head of the sculpture was seen lying detached from its body. Police are yet to ascertain who is responsible for the vandalism. The vandalism was reported in Jhunsi’s Trivenipuram. This is the third such case of BR Ambedkar’s statue being vandalised in Uttar Pradesh. The statue and bust vandalisation spree began when the statue of Communist revolutionary Vladimir Lenin was brought down in Tripura after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) swept the state assembly elections 2018. Following the Lenin statue vandalism, a statue of social reformer Ramasamy Periyar, located inside the Tirupattur corporation office, was also destroyed in Vellore district of Tamil Nadu. On March 7, a statue of Dr BR Ambedkar was vandalised in Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh. The vandalism came amid an ongoing spate of incidents targeting statues and busts of known figures across the country. Following the incident, members of the Dalit community blocked the Meerut-Mawana road and protested against the vandalism. The authorities later installed another statue of Ambedkar at the same place.
On March 10, some unidentified people damaged the sculpture of Dr BR Ambedkar in Azamgarh. “Three men have been identified, currently they are absconding, will be arrested soon,” said Deputy Inspector General Vijay Bhushan told media. Ambedkar’s statue was vandalised in Uttarakhand’s Haridwar on March 9. Another such report came from Tiruvottiyur in Chennai where the accused, police said, was mentally unstable.
