Kolkata: Babul Supriyo, the two-time Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from West Bengal, announced in a Facebook post that he has quit politics. The singer-turned-politician Babul Supriyo on Saturday wrote “Alvida (goodbye)”, saying that he will not join any other party and is retiring to concentrate on social work.
Speculations grew over his retirement from politics after his cryptic posts on social media over the past few days.
Here’s what his post in Bengali read:
“I am leaving.. Goodbye… Heard everything everyone had to say – Father, (mother) wife, daughter, dear friends.. After listening to everything, I am confirming, I am going…” Supriyo said in a lengthy Facebook post.
The Asansol MP elaborated on his political journey and said that he has always been a “one team player” and supported only one party – BJP in West Bengal. Supriyo recently faced two heavy blows, first he lost the Bengal elections and then lost his Union Cabinet berth. He has also had a trying relationship with Bengal BJP chief Dilip Ghosh.
“I’m not going to any political party – TMC, Congress, CPI(M) nobody has called me, I’m not going anywhere…One need not be in politics to do social work,” he added.
“I have made some of you happy, some sad but after a long discussion, am saying am leaving. It’s not possible to stay in politics and do social work. Let me settle myself. The last few days, I have gone to Amit Shah and JP Nadda Ji, I have told them what I feel.
“I will never forget their love and so I can’t go to them, I don’t have the audacity to go to them and say this. I have decided what I will do; I had decided long back so if I go now they may feel am bargaining and when that is not right I don’t want them to have the wrong idea. I only pray they don’t misunderstand me,” the singer-turned-politician said.

Babul Supriyo, who was elected to the Lok Sabha from Asansol, lost against Arup Biswas of Trinamool in Tollygunj in May this year by 50,080 votes.
At the Union Cabinet, Supriyo served as the Minister of State for Urban Development, Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation from November 2014 to July 2016, and then Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises till May 2019. He also served as the Minister of State for Environment.
