Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi Resigns as Minority Affairs Minister, May Run For Vice President Post

New Delhi: Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Wednesday tendered resignation from his post and handed over letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Ahead of his resignation, Naqvi had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president JP Nadda.

The BJP leader resigned as Union Minister amid buzz that he may run for Vice President post. Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu’s term ends on August 10 and according to EC, July 19 is the last date for nominations for Vice President. The elections for the Vice President will be held on August 6.

As per media reports, Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan, former Union Minister Najma Heptulla and former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh are also in the fray for the Vice President post.

Notably, Naqvi’s term in Rajya Sabha ends tomorrow and the BJP did not name him for another term during recent elections.

Interestingly, Naqvi and Rajnath Singh are the two ministers in PM Modi’s government who were also in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee led-BJP government.

For quite long time now, the ruling party has been discussing a representative from a minority community for Vice President post, especially at a time the BJP is facing criticism over the Prophet Muhammad comments by Nupur Sharma.
