New Delhi: It was a day of glory and honour for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as the party on Tuesday repeated its victory of 2015 and won 62 seats in the Delhi Assembly Election 2020.

As per the final results from the Election Commission, the BJP won only 8 seats and the Congress failed to open an account this time also. The polls to the 70-seat Assembly of the national capital was held on February 8 and the counting of votes began today at 21 places amid tight security.

However, the BJP improved its tally to eight from three in the last elections. On the other hand, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal won from New Delhi assembly seat. Kejriwal defeated Sunil Kumar Yadav of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who polled 25,061 votes, which is 32.75 per cent of total votes polled.

According to the updates from the Election Commission at 9.32 PM, the AAP has got 53.57 per cent votes, the BJP 38.50 per cent, BSP 0.71 per cent, the CPL 0.02 per cent, the CPM 0.01 per cent, the Congress 4.26 per cent, the JDU 0.91 per cent, the LJP 0.35 per cent, and the NCP 0.02 per cent.

Congratulatory messages

Soon after the trends indicated a clear victory for the AAP, Chief Minister Kejriwal thanked the party workers and voters for their support and hard work. “I thank all the citizens of Delhi and all our party workers. Our party workers continued to work throughout day and night. My family also supported me through this electoral battle. Today is also the birthday of my wife,” he added.

A host of political leader started congratulating Kejriwal for his spectacular triumph in the assembly polls. The prominent leaders who congratulated him included Shiv Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, PM Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

Later Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari also congratulated Kejriwal and expressed gratitude towards the BJP party workers for their hard work in the run-up to the polls. However, he added that he will evaluate the outcome and the party cadres should not feel disheartened over the performance.

Congress leader P Chidambaram took a dig at BJP and said the people of Delhi have defeated the dangerous agenda of BJP. “AAP won, bluff and bluster lost. The people of Delhi, who are from all parts of India, have defeated the polarising, divisive and dangerous agenda of the BJP. I salute the people of Delhi who have set an example to other states that will hold their elections in 2021 and 2022,” Chidambaram said in a tweet.

Grand celebration at party office

Grand celebrations marked the victory of the AAP at the party office as many bigwigs of the party won the polls. Party leader Amanatullah Khan won from Okhla, the constituency which includes Shaheen Bagh, by over 71,000 votes.

Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday evening sought cooperation from PM Modi to run his government in Delhi. “Thank u so much sir. I look forward to working closely wid Centre to make our capital city into a truly world-class city.”

Subhash Chopra resigns as Delhi Congress chief

Following the poll debacle, Delhi Congress chief Subhash Chopra on Tuesday evening resigned from his post. Earlier in the day, Chopra blamed Bharatiya Janata Party and Aam Aadmi Party for carrying out politics of polarisation which resulted in a dip in the Congress’ vote percentage.

“I take responsibility for the party’s performance, we will analyse the factors behind this. Reason for the drop in our vote percentage is politics of polarization by both BJP and AAP,” Chopra told ANI. Saying that the Congress always stood against the communal forces, Chopra said his party will always remain against the BJP till the end.

Perfect birthday gift for Sunita Kejriwal

Sunita Kejriwal, the wife of AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal, said she has received the perfect birthday gift this time. She also stated that politics should be done on the basis of issues. “It’s the biggest gift I’ve received (she celebrates her birthday today). This is the victory of truth. I think politics should be done on the basis of issues. Political parties should learn that such comments shouldn’t be made,” Sunita Kejriwal said.
