Budget 2017: Who gets what? Here’s a complete breakdown of the budget allocation to different sectors

New Delhi, Feb 2: Finance minister Arun Jaitley rolled out the Union Budget for the financial year 2017-18 in Parliament. This year, the Finance Minister presented a budget of Rs 21,47,000 crore which is 8.6% higher than Rs 19,78,060, the last year’s financial roll out. However, last year the budget was 10.8% higher than the budget which was presented for the fiscal year 2015-16.

The total expenditure for 2017-18 is Rs 21,47,000 crore. One fourth of that amount will be spent on paying interest and servicing debt i.e., approximately 24.4% of the whole budget. Out of that 75.6%, 11.2% will go to subsidies; 14.9% on Wages, Slaries and Payments. This much deduction will leave the government with 49.5% of the whole proposed expenditure which is nearly Rs 10,62, 751 crore which will be allocated to other sectors of the Indian economy.

There are basically three sources of the government’s income that goes directly in its pocket and a lot is covered in these three:

  1. Taxes revenue i.e., all the revenue collected from various taxes
  2. Non-tax revenue i.e., revenue collected from interest, assets in form of dividend and profits, fees, fines and miscellaneous receipts.
  3. Capital receipts i.e., borrowings and other liabilities

Which ministry gained the most?

Arun Jaitley expanded allocation to each sector. Proposed allocation to Ministry of Women and Child Development has increased by 86%, from Rs 3,094 crore in 2016-17 to Rs 22,094 crore in 2017-18. The allocation to the Ministry of Railways has been increased by 18% from Rs 45,000 crore in 2016-17 to Rs 55,000 crore in 2017-18. The allocation to the Ministry of Defence was increased from Rs 340,922 crore in 2016-17 to Rs 359,853 crore.
