New Delhi: Controversial BJP MLA Sangeet Som has come out in support of the government decision to provide compensation to Sumit, the youth who died in Bulandshahr violence earlier this week. (Also read: UP CM Yogi Adityanath Meets Slain Cops’ Family, Orders Loan Waiver)

Questions have been raised as to why Sumit’s family was given compensation when a video surfaced on the Internet in which the youth could purportedly be seen throwing stones along with the mob.

Reacting, Som wondered why no questions were asked when the family of Akhlaq, the Dadri lynching victim, was given compensation. “Did you question when Akhlaq’s family was given compensation? He was also an accused… All those involved in Akhlaq’s death should be punished, but remember that cattle carcass was found from his home,” he said.

In 2015, Mohammad Akhlaq was lynched and his son Danish, 22, was brutally beaten up for allegedly eating beef on Eid and even storing it for later in Dadri’s Bishara village.

Even the Bulandshahr incident stemmed from allegations of cow slaughter which snowballed into a clash between the villagers and the police.

Meanwhile, the controversial video is of three-minute duration and shows 20-year-old Sumit pelting stones before getting shot in the chest. He does not appear to be a bystander as his family has been claiming. In fact, his family is reportedly on a hunger strike till his name is struck off the FIR.

The Uttar Pradesh government announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for Sumit’s kin. Four persons were arrested on Tuesday after police lodged an FIR against over two dozen people for rioting and murder.

The main accused has also been arrested now. He is a member of Bajrang Dal.  Yogesh Raj had been absconding since Monday. Yogesh is the fifth person to be arrested in connection with the mob violence.
