Chandigarh, January 6: The bypoll elections to Amritsar Lok Sabha seat which has been recently vacated by Captain Amarinder Singh will be held on February 4, Election Commission said in a statement today. Three months ago Captain Amarinder Singh a senior leader of Punjab from Congress vacated from his Lok Sabha seat, marking a protest against the Supreme Court order on Sutlej Yamuna Link (SYL) dispute which came as a setback to Punjab government.
In 2014, Captain Amrinder Singh was elected from Amritsar Lok Sabha seat where he defeated prominent Bharatiya Janata Party leader Arun Jaitley. The Election Commission today declared the date of by-poll elections, however, none of the major political parties has declared their candidates. In Punjab, the state assembly elections will be held on February 4 and the results will be declared on March 11.
There are chances that BJP may try to project some strong candidate in Amritsar. According to reports, a former Congress minister said that many leaders declined to contest the Lok Sabha bypoll, as most of them preferred to contest assembly elections.
On the other side, Aam Aadmi Party who had won four Lok Sabha seats in 2014 Lok Sabha elections is also silent over its plans for the Lok Sabha seat. “We are yet to spare a thought on fielding candidates for the bypoll as our priority is to finalise candidates for Amritsar’s East, North and Central constituencies,” Gurbejh Singh was quoted by Tribune India.
There are rumours that newly inducted Sikh face Advocate Jaswinder Singh might be asked to contest from Amritsar Lok Sabha seat. Also, there are chances that AAP may project its candidate Majitha Himmat Singh Shergill to fight Amritsar Lok Sabha bypoll, along with the Assembly seat.
According to reports, from BJP, Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina, Tarun Chugh and Kamal Sharma are on the list. Chhina a popular local face and an arch rival of Navjot Singh Sidhu has been making trips to Delhi to meet BJP party president Amit Shah. He reportedly confirmed that he had met some senior leaders of the party and added that he was ready for the fight. Chhina is also a close confidante of Arun Jaitley who holds the final words on Lok Sabha berth.
