Indian-Canadian artist Naanak Sodhi, better known as Sodhivine, is a force on the rise. This young musician not only sings and writes but also composes—quite beautifully I might add. His music, which Sodhivine describes simply as “rich,” adds a rare eccentric flair to the growing world of pop and electronic music.
Over the years, he has amassed over 2,200,000 listens on his Soundcloud, and more than two million views on his featured projects worldwide. He’s collaborated with top urban desi artists like The PropheC and Mickey Singh. His latest release is a soothing track titled “Blue,” check it out! You can even download the track for free, here.
He has also been featured on high-profile blogs such a Skrillex’s NEST HQ, which wrote: “Many of his [Sodhivine’s] exploits bridge a tantalizing gap between sounds indigenous to South Asia and big, thundering Trap anthems, but today he’s offered up something different to showcase his range as a multifaceted producer and composer.”
In addition to his pop and electronic music production, he has also scored two feature films and has a traditional ear for classical music.
“Grade 7 is when I discovered music production,” Sodhivine revealed, speaking about his first steps in the music field. “My school bought an eMac computer, and I was instantly hooked to creating my own music on it: that was definitely the ‘spark’. I then went home and legally purchased some music production software, and I haven’t left my room since.”
Sodhivine spent four years training as a drummer and he also studied music theory of composition. His favorite instrument to play is the piano but it looks like drums will always stay his first love. “I love the flexibility and capability of the piano — you can literally play so many different things with so many different emotions. The polyphony is limitless,” the young musician explained. “But you can’t hit a piano with a stick, so the drums are my favorite.”
Sodhivine likens his skills as a composer to that of a designer and says that if he wasn’t a musician he probably would be a designer of sorts. “I love being creative and building things,” he said. “In a way, I build and design music as well!”
The talented composer looks to simplicity when he is ‘designing music’ as he calls it. ” I’ve found that simplicity in itself is powerful,” he said. “A good example would be old folk music: simple, but effective. You can’t do too many things in a song, so you have to be very streamlined.”
He enjoys working with artists from all walks of life from big names to singers who are just starting their career. “I love collaborating with artists that are genuine, no matter how ‘famous’ they may be,” Sodhivine said. “A lot of my collaborations are people I’ve met at parties and at a university.”
Among big names, he lists Zedd as an artist he hopes to work with in the future.
As for his future plans, he said: “Celebrating my dog’s eigth birthday and making the new James Bond theme song with Adele and Andre 3000.”
Besides scoring Bond films, this star on the rise hopes to become composer who can leave his mark in the music industry. “The end goal is to have a significant impact on the field of music as a composer and producer,” the eager star said. “I want to create new things that a lot of people enjoy.” However, closer to the present, Sodhivine does have a 4-5 singles he’s gearing up to release, one of which is titled “Blue.”
“It’s been very enlightening,” the young composer said about his music career thus far. “I’ve learned a lot about myself through my music, but most importantly, I’ve seen it grow from when I was a child. It’s been this evolving project for close to a decade now; it’s really cool to look back and laugh at what I thought was ‘good.'”
