New Delhi: A team of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials were thrashed by the relatives of another CBI official after the former visited the latter’s home on Saturday to probe the 2014 fraudulent land case from his village in Greater Noida. The relatives of the accused sleuth beat them up with sticks so that the accused could escape.
According to a statement from the CBI, the five officials were held hostage and assaulted while Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Sunil Dutt sneaked out through a back door. “They also burnt the mobile phone, diary and identity cards of some team members,” it said.
The investigative agency said it filed a complaint with the police, following which an FIR was also registered. It even alleged that mobile phones, ID cards of some members were burnt by the attackers. The CBI officials are currently hospitalised.
“An information was received at Ecotech-3 police station about the family and relatives of the accused misbehaving with CBI officials. The police immediately reached the spot and detained some persons from the spot. The complaint of misbehaviour was found true, a case has been registered and legal proceedings are underway,” Superintendent of Police (Rural) Vineet Jaiswal said.
“The two CBI officials, in a conspiracy with unknown police officers in the Uttar Pradesh government, tried to influence the probe in an attempt to obtain undue relief for the accused in the land scam cases in lieu of illegal gratification,” the FIR stated. As per sources, police have launched an investigation on the basis of a complaint from the central investigative agency.
The CBI is probing a 2014 case of alleged land fraud, amounting to Rs 126 crore, linked to the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA). On February 3, it had booked two of its officials posted in Ghaziabad, both of who were probing the case, on charges of criminal conspiracy and under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The accused CBI Inspector VS Rathore was arrested while ASI Dutt has been absconding.
