Chennai, July 24: Four passengers on a local train have died and at least 10 were injured after being hit by iron poles beside railway tracks at Chennai’s St Thomas Mount as they travelled on the footboard of a train on Tuesday morning. “When the train was arriving at St Thomas Mount, 10 passengers were hanging out of the door,” a railways official told The News Minute. “They seem to have hit a wall or a pole and fallen down. According to The Hindu, the incident occurred when the Tirumalpur-bound slow train was heading towards Platform number 3 of Thomas Mount station. Many commuters were on the footboard of the overcrowded train during the rush hour. As the train approached the station, four people reportedly hit the concrete fence and many others fell on them.
Hindustan Times says the passengers fell off the train and hit a concrete wall, while The Times of India said the deaths occurred when the passengers fell and hit concrete poles. The daily said that two similar deaths had occurred on Monday as well. More details are awaited.
