Chennai, July 17: An 11-year-old girl was allegedly raped by at least 20 men for several months at an apartment complex in Chennai’s Purasawalkam, according to reports. Police have arrested 18 of the suspects, including the building’s security guards. The suspects also include elevator operators and plumbers of the apartment complex.
A Times of India report cited the investigation officer as revealing that the men sedated the Class VII girl with injections and drug-laced soft drinks before sexually assaulting her. They allegedly also made videos as they assaulted her. The perpetrators allegedly used to the videos to threaten the girl into silence.
The matter came to light after the victim, having a hearing disorder, narrated the sequence of incidents to her elder sister, who later brought this to the notice of their parents, following which a complaint was lodged on Sunday.
Narrating her ordeal of seven months, the girl told the police that she was first sexually assaulted by 66-year-old Ravi Kumar, an elevator operator. Three days later, he brought two other men who were under the influence of alcohol and raped her. Eventually, other men joined in and raped the minor over a period of seven months starting January 15.
According to the police, the men would wait at the apartment gate when the girl returned from school from where they would take her away and rape her. Assuming the child had gone out to play, her mother would wait for her to return.
The girl’s parents took her to Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital for a checkup on Sunday. Her examination reportedly confirmed she had been raped by many men.
