Chennai lockdown relaxations: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Saturday announced that lockdown will be relaxed in Chennai from July 6. As per relaxations, vegetable and grocery shops have been allowed to open from July 6 (6 am to 6 pm). Textile and hardware shops can function from 10 am to 6 pm, while restaurants from 6 am to 9 pm. Earlier in the day, Palaniswami announced that a complete shutdown will be reimposed in Madurai and area limits of adjoining rural civic bodies of Paravai and Thiruparankundram panchayats till July 12. The decision has been taken in a bid to combat the spread of COVID-19 or coronavirus pandemic, which has infected more than 1 lakh people across the state.

On Friday, Tamil Nadu crossed the one lakh mark in terms of number of persons infected by coronavirus. But, on the positive side, 2,357 Covid-19 patients were cured and discharged from various hospitals in the state, taking the total number of Covid-19 cured to 58,378.

Chennai continued to be the worst-affected city in the state with total 64,689 cases. The active cases in Chennai stands at 23,581.
