CRPF jawan opens fire in Bijapur; four colleagues killed.

Raipur, Dec 9: A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan on Saturday killed four colleagues as he opened fire at them at CRPF 168 Battalion Camp in Basaguda following a scuffle in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh. Five CRPF personnel were injured in the firing, out of which four succumbed to injuries whereas, one is said to be grievously injured and has been airlifted to Jagdalpur for better medical care.

“4 jawans dead, 1 injured after a CRPF jawan opened fire in Bijapur’s Basaguda CRPF 168 Battalion Camp,” P Sundar Raj, DIG Chhattisgarh Police (Dantewada division) told news agency ANI. He also added more information on the incident will be out when the senior CRPF officials finish their enquiries. “Preliminary information suggests that firing happened only from one end, and this was after some internal conflict. How the accused was subdued or If he surrendered is a matter of further investigation,” he was quoted as saying in The Indian Express report.

The deceased personnel have been identified as SI VK Sharma, SI Megh Singh, Assistant SI Rajveer Singh and constable Sankara Rao. ASI Gajanand has sustained injuries.

Reports say, the accused CRPF jawan, Sant Kumar, reportedly used an AK-47 to fire at his colleagues after a scuffle broke out between them. The incident happened around 5.15 PM on Saturday. Meanwhile, Kumar has been taken into custody and has been handed over to the police.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh expressed grief over the incident and wished for the swift recovery of the injured jawan.

As per the latest reports, a special team has been formed to probe the incident.
