Kolkata, March 1: The Bharatiya Janata Party has removed Juhi Chowdhury as the General Secretary of the party’s Mahila Morcha in West Bengal. This comes a day after she was arrested in connection with a child trafficking case. Juhi Chowdhury was on Tuesday arrested close to the India-Nepal border in the Darjeeling district by the CID in connection with her alleged involvement in the child trafficking racket in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri.
Chowdhury was on the run after her name was linked to the case. She was arrested from the Batasi area under Kharibari police station in Siliguri on Tuesday. Chowdhury was produced in court on Wednesday and has been sent to 12 days of CID remand by the Jalpaiguri District Court.
Chowdhury’s arrest came after Chandana Chakraborty, another accused arrested in the case, spoke against her. Chandana Chakraborty is the chairperson of Jalpaiguri-based child adoption centre Bimala Sishu Griho. She was arrested with Chief Adoption Officer Sonali Mondal for allegedly trafficking at least 17 children.
Chakraborty reportedly claimed that she went to Delhi with Chowdhury to seek help for her organisation and claimed the BJP leader did all the negotiations with the senior leadership. Chakraborty has also pointed at the alleged involvement of BJP national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya and women’s wing president Roopa Ganguly in the case. Vijayvargia has said that the party does not trust the investigation by the West Bengal government. “Of course if she is involved then must be punished, but we don’t trust investigations of WB Government,” Vijayvargia said.
Roopa Ganguly, too, has claimed that she was being framed. “It is all being done to actually frame me. She is being used as a pawn, this will not scare us,” Ganguly said.
BJP state president Dilip Ghosh had denied the allegation saying Chowdhury was being victimised as part of a larger political conspiracy.
Along with Chakraborty, Sonali Mondal, Chief Adoption Officer of the NGO, and Manas Bhowmik, Chandana’s brother, were also earlier arrested by the CID in the case.
