Air power has long been a decisive factor in global dominance, playing a vital role in warfare since the early 20th century and proving an essential asset for armed forces worldwide. According to data from Global Firepower 2025, US air power is unparalleled, surpassing the combined air capabilities of Russia, China, India, South Korea, and Japan, as it accounts for nearly 40% of global military spending.
The US dominates the list of the world’s most powerful air forces, while Russia is second. However, what is pertinent to mention here is that India has surpassed China’s air force in terms of strength. According to WDMMA, an organisation that monitors the world’s air forces, India’s air force is considered the most powerful, after the US and Russia. China, on the other hand, is fourth. Pakistan doesn’t even make the top 10 in this list.
The current WDMMA list tracks 103 countries, covering 129 air services (including the army, navy, and marine branches). A total of 48,082 aircraft are included in the survey.
Military budgets on constant rise
According to a report in the Indian Express, global military expenditure is set to reach a record high of $2.44 trillion in 2023 due to current geopolitical tensions and conflicts, such as the Ukraine crisis and rising tensions in regions like the Middle East. This represents a 6.8% increase over the previous year, according to the SIPRI report. Air military capabilities across the world are experiencing significant progress and strategic development. Countries around the world are constantly upgrading their air capabilities to maintain strategic advantages and establish themselves as leading air forces.
China ahead of India but is lacking in…
Russia ranks second after the United States in terms of air fleet in the Global Firepower Index, possessing approximately one-third of US’ air capabilities. China, which is third in terms of air fleet, is rapidly advancing its capabilities through significant investments in technology.
Indian Air Force surpasses China
On this basis, India is ranked ahead of China in the WDMMA rankings. India is ranked third with 69.4 TVR, while China is ranked fourth with 63.8 TVR. The US Air Force is ranked first with 242.9 TVR, while the US Air Force is ranked second with 142.4 TVR. Russia is ranked third with 114.2 TVR. The US Army is ranked fourth with 112.6 TVR. The US Marines are ranked fifth with 85.3 TVR. India’s actual rank is sixth with 69.4 TVR. However, if the strength of all four US fleets is considered as one, India comes in third. During Operation Sindoor, the Indian Air Force shot down Chinese aircraft belonging to the Pakistan Air Force.
US is number one because it has this
The United States’ vast industrial base allows it to source many of its products locally. It also has dedicated strategic-level bombers, CAS aircraft, a large helicopter and fighter force (many of which are multi-role types), and hundreds of transport aircraft capable of reaching anywhere in the world. It also has a large training, tanker, and special-missions force. This service is expected to be further strengthened in the near future, with hundreds of units currently on order.
