CM Vijay backs Rahul Gandhi: A day after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was detained during his flash protest with other party leaders outside the Prime Minister's residence, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay broke his silence over the issue and termed the police action against the former Congress president as "undemocratic".
Notably, the grand old party is in alliance with the actor-turned-politician's TVK in Tamil Nadu.
What Did CM Vijay Say?
The actor-turned-politician, in a statement, talked about the detention of Rahul Gandhi, who had come out in support of protesting students, and condemned the detention. He also announced TVK is going to support the Opposition's protest inside Parliament over police action against students on Monday.
Clarifying his party's stance on NEET, CM Vijay reiterated that TVK remained committed to the complete abolition of the exam. He argued that the irregularities in the NEET examination have adversely affected students.
"The NEET examination must be abolished completely. We reiterate that this alone is the solution to this issue," he said.
CM Vijay Calls For Structural Reforms
The Tamil Nadu CM also called for structural reforms and argued that education should be moved back to the State List. According to him, this is the only permanent solution to abolishing NEET.
As a temporary measure until constitutional changes are made, Vijay suggested establishing a Special Concurrent List to grant states greater authority over medical admissions.
Vijay noted that TVK has held this stance since the party came to power, having already offered both short-term and permanent solutions. He requested the Central government to respect student concerns and scrap the exam completely.
'Sansad Chalo' March: CJP Accuses Police Of High-Handedness
CJP national spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka told news agency ANI that the protesters had been staging a peaceful for over 30 days. He termed the protest "the biggest movement in India's post-independence history"
Ranka alleged that the march held on Monday, July 20, was peaceful until the Delhi Police, according to him, used force against peaceful protesters. He claimed that the protesting students were thrashed during the peaceful protest.
"The youth of this country will no longer remain silent. We have been distracted by too many unnecessary issues. Now we are standing up for the real issues, and we are not going to back down," Ranka told news agency PTI.
CJP Warns Of Bigger Protest
Ranka said that his party would escalate its protest if the centre government did not accept its demands, terming the July 20 protest "just a trailer". He warned that "millions more" would come to the national capital to participate in the protest if the government failed to act.
He reiterated CJP's demand that no FIRs be registered against protesters, emphasising that the protest would not end unless the demand was met.
Reiterating CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke's remarks, Ranka said the party's leadership is prepared to face legal action under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and the National Security Act (NSA).
Ranka also appealed to political parties to support the protest, saying their demands were "genuine".
