New Delhi, June 23: With the announcement of 30 new cities as smart cities, the total number of smart cities has reached 90. Smart City Mission launched on June 25, 2015 and the announcement of new 30 names was done by the Central government on Thursday. In the new list, Thiruvanathapuram, Kerala’s capital, topped.

The announcement of the 30 names was made by the Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu at a National Workshop on Urban Transformation on Thursday. Addressing the event, Naidu said that 45 cities contested for 40 available smart city slots but only 30 were selected to ensure feasible and workable plans that match the aspirations of the citizens as directed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi while launching the mission.

He also informed that the 30 cities announced on Thursday proposed a total investment of Rs 57,393 crore under respective smart city plans. With this the total investment approved under the smart city plans of 90 cities has gone up to Rs.1,91,155 crore.

Till now, four lists have been announced, including the latest one. The first list included the names of 20 cities and Bhubaneswar topped it. The second list comprised of 13 names and it was first spot in this list was bagged by Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow. The third list, which had the names of 27 smart cities, was topped by Punjab’s Amritsar.

These are: Itanagar (Arunachal Pradesh), Biharsharif (Bihar), Diu (Daman & Diu), Silvassa (Dadra and Nager Haveli), Kavaratti (Lakshadweep), Navimumbai, Greater Mumbai and Amaravati (Maharashtra), Imphal (Manipur), Shillong (Meghalaya), Dindigul and Erode(Tamil Nadu), Bidhannagar, Durgapur and Haldia (West Bengal), Meerut, Rai Bareilly, Ghaziabad, Sharanpur and Rampur (UP).
