New Delhi: The Congress Party on Friday attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government over an all-around failure to the agrarian crisis, economic turmoil and deteriorating ties with neighbouring countries saying if Narendra Modi had been the PM of any other country, he would have to resign. Kapil Sibal was speaking at the launch of his book “Shades of Truth—A Journey Derailed”.

“The great leader after 2014 gave us demonetisation where we lost 1.5 per cent GDP. In any other country, he would have had to resign. (The) manner in which GST was implemented, here was a man with the majority in Parliament and what has he done for four years, in terms of economic growth, liberalisation?” Congress leader Kapil Sibal asked.

He further said, “He (PM Modi) charged us that because of policy paralysis, we couldn’t take India forward but this policy paralysis brought 8.2% GDP which has never happened in the history of this country. That was the result of policy paralysis and I assume there’s no policy paralysis today, where is GDP?”

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also launched a scathing attack on the Narendra Modi government and said there has not been any meaningful impact of the programs such as Make in India or Stand Up India. “… Small and marginal enterprises yet to derive significant benefit from the ease of doing business schemes. Demonetisation and GST’s hasty implementation has hurt enterprises,” he said.

“Our youth are desperately waiting for the promised 2 Crore jobs. Employment growth rate has been declining in last 4 years. People aren’t impressed with the figures being put out by Modi govt to justify creation of a large number of jobs,” he further said. Continuing his attack on Modi on his 2014 poll promises, Singh said nothing concrete was done to bring back black money stashed in foreign tax havens.

“Women, Dalits, and minorities are increasingly living in an environment of insecurity. The Modi government has slowly but surely undermined the values that any democratic party, any democratic polity should fiercely protect. Our relations with neighbours have deteriorated in last 4 years. Modi government has failed to address issues relating to creative use of science and technology,” he added.
