New Delhi: The Congress, which scored a second successive duck in the recently-held Delhi Assembly Election, is now reportedly mulling sending several young faces in the Rajya Sabha as part of a major reshuffle. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the party’s general secretary for Uttar Pradesh seat, is reportedly among those whose names are being considered for the Upper House. The move is said to be under consideration to help the party counter the BJP in the Rajya Sabha, where the Congress is the second-largest party with 46 seats after the BJP, which has 82 seats. The party reportedly feels that while it has Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha to counter the BJP, it needs a face to do the same in the Rajya Sabha and, as such, Priyanka’s name is doing the rounds. Priyanka Gandhi made her political debut last January, just three months before the Lok Sabha elections. She has, in recent days, made headlines for visiting those injured, or the families of those killed in Uttar Pradesh Police’s crackdown on anti-CAA protests.
Besides her, others who are being considered for a Rajya Sabha seat include former Guna Lok Sabha MP Jyotiraditya Scindia, who in recent days has been in the news for publically taking on Madhya Pradesh CM Kamal Nath for not fulfilling promises made to the people.
The Rajya Sabha terms of several Congress veterans are set to expire this year. In all, a total of 68 Rajya Sabha seats will fall vacant in 2020, elections to fill which will take place in April (51), June (five), July (one) and November (11).
There are a total of 245 seats in the Rajya Sabha, also known as the ‘House of Elders.’
