New Delhi, January 27: A week after Election Commission of India (ECI) announced polling dates in northeastern states of Meghalaya, Tripura and Nagaland, the Congress on Saturday officially came out with a list of first two states.
The Congress finalised the list of 56 candidates from Tripura and it announced 57 candidates for Meghalaya Assembly. On January 18, the EC announced dates for polls in Meghalaya, Tripura and Nagaland legislatures.
These three states are among eight states in the country that will go to polls this year.
While the voters of Tripura will vote on February 18, voters in Meghalaya and Nagaland will exercise their franchise on February 27. The counting will be commenced on March 3 and the results will be declared on the same day.
According to the Chief Election Commissioner, A K Joti, who announced poll dates before taking retirement, Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines will be deployed in three states along with EVMs for the first time.
Terms for elections in Meghalaya, Tripura and Nagaland are going to end on March 6, March 14 and March 13, 2018, respectively. The strength of these three Assemblies in 60 each.
In Meghalaya, the Congress party is in power as it had won 29 seats in the previous polls. In Tripura, the Left Front is in power while in Nagaland, the Naga People’s Front is at the helm.
Apart from these three states, this year polls will also be held in the Karnataka, Mizoram, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan Assemblies.
