New Delhi: Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has tested positive for coronavirus, local reports that emerged on Friday evening, have claimed. The possible development comes just days after one of his staff officials, too tested positive for COVID-19, in the process, almost transferring the disease to US President Donald Trump. Bolsonaro, according to reports, was being monitored after his press secretary Fabio Wajngarten, who accompanied him on a state visit to the US last week, tested positive for the virus. Bolsonaro had dined with President Trump at the latter’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida; Wajngarten had uploaded images from the dinner on his Instagram account. In some of the images, he can be seen in close proximity with the two Heads of State.

Trump, however, had brushed aside concerns that he could have possibly contracted coronavirus from his Brazilian counterpart’s press secretary, telling reporters at the White House, “Let’s put it this way: I’m not concerned.” in a statement, the White House has said that neither Trump nor Vice President Mike Pence had any interaction with Wajngarten, adding that that neither needed coronavirus testing ‘at this time.’

Bolsonaro himelf had downplayed the crisis on Wednesday, remarking that ‘other flus kill more than coronavirus.’ His son Eduardo, a congressman who too was part of the said visit to the US, tweeted that his father ‘is not exhibiting any signs of the disease.’

The reports come on a day worldwide death toll due to the virus crossed the 5,000-mark. Among those to have tested positive include Sophie Trudeau, the wife of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau; Australia’s Minister of Home Affairs Peter Dutton, too, tested positive for coronavirus.
