Covid Update: India, China, and several other countries are currently witnessing a major spike in COVID-19 cases. The World Health Organization (WHO) has also expressed its concern over the resurgence of the virus. According to WHO, there has been an increase in the activity of the SARS-CoV-2 virus globally since mid-February 2025.
As per WHO data, the COVID test positivity rate has reached 11%, which is the highest since July 2024. As of May 27, India has a total of 1,010 active cases. The rise in cases comes amid the detection of two new sub-variants – NB.1.8.1 and LF.7 – which are currently under observation by global health authorities. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has classified the LF.7 and NB.1.8 subvariants as “Variants Under Monitoring”, not as Variants of Concern or Interest.
In an important update, the World Health Organization has said that since the beginning of 2025, there has been a slight shift in the trend of COVID-19 variants. There has been a significant decline in the LP.8.1 variant, while the NB.1.8.1 variant has been classified as a Variant Under Monitoring, as its cases are rising rapidly. By mid-May 2025, this variant accounted for 10.7 percent of all genomic sequences reported globally.
The current level of infections reflects a situation similar to this time last year. WHO has said that no clear seasonal pattern has been observed in the spread of COVID-19 so far. Additionally, surveillance systems in many countries are still limited, which remains a matter of concern.
