Ahmednagar, August 6: Around 20 people have been detained by Ahmednagar police officials on Saturday night in connection to with an alleged attack on ‘gau rakshaks’ (cow vigilantes) in Shrigonda (100 km from Pune, Maharashtra) earlier in the evening. A report said that seven cow vigilantes were severely injured and were admitted to a hospital following the attack.
The situation in Shrigonda was tense for few hours and was brought under control after heavy deployment of police officials. The local administration has deployed heavy police force in Shrigonda and other sensitive places in Ahmednagar district considering communal nature of the incident.
The cops have registered several cases against the offenders including an attempt to murder against 20 people who are likely to be formally arrested soon. Since today evening, police have started recording statements of the detained people and more arrests are likely to take place.
A Hindustan Times report said that a mob had attacked cow protectors when they intercepted a mini truck, which allegedly was transporting cows to a slaughter house. The cows were allegedly picked up from Kashti in Ahmednagar district. The problem started soon after Shishankar Swami, an activist based in Pune, approached Shrigonda police after they discovered he transportation of cows.
The cops intercepted the vehicle near Shrigonda and took it to the police station and registered a case against the driver Fatturbhai Shaikh and his helper Sajid Gulkab Shaikh. Twelve cows were found in the mini truck.
The situation became more intense when Swami insisted upon registering a case against arrested two. The cops asked them to wait at the police station till senior officials arrived at the station. Swami and others were attacked by a mob when they were waiting outside the police station. The police complaint said that the mob attacked seven gau rakshaks with sticks and stones.
The seven victims were bleeding profusely when they were taken to the hospital for treatment, police said. The victims were later shifted to Ahmednagar for further medical treatment.
Within few hours after the incident, police immediately caught few people after the attack and beefed up security in Shrigonda and few other places after the incident.
Swami is a well-known activist of Pune’s Akhil Bharat Krishi Gosewa Sangh, founded by Mahatma Gandhi. In past, he had intercepted vehicles transporting cows from one place to another.
