New Delhi, Oct 4: One of the accused in Dadri lynching case, identified as Robin, has reportedly died in judicial custody. In his early 20s, Robin was lodged into jail after police found incrementing evidence that he was part of the mob which hacked 52-year-old Mohammad Akhlaq to death. The reason for Robin’s death is specified to be respiratory and kidney failure. However, Robin’s family members have alleged foul play in his death. Robin was taken to hospital a couple of days ago. However, his medical condition had deteriorated and the doctors treating him could not save his life. The death of Robin is bound to escalate tensions in the communally sensitive region of Dadri. Recently, the villagers had called for a mahapanchayat (grand assembly), seeking action against the family members of Akhlaq, who are accused of slaughtering a cow and consuming its beef. Akhlaq’s family has denied the accusation slaughtering the cow and claimed that meat seized from their home was of a goat rather than cow’s progeny. A local court had earlier instructed an FIR against the family members of Akhlaq, after the Mathura Forensic lab report claimed that the meat was of cow’s progeny. However, Akhlaq’s kin have alleged foul play and cited the earlier medical report which stated that meat was of a goat. The case is yet to be probed. Akhlaq was murdered on September 28, 2015 by a frenzied mob after an announcement was made by the local temple that his family had slaughtered a cow. While Akhlaq was hacked to death, his son Danish was injured in a critical manner. The case brought immense amount of flak towards BJP, after one of the accused, Vishal Rana was found to be the son of local BJP leader Suresh Rana.
