Patna, November 15: There’s no doubt that Hindutva ideology political parties and entities have faced a huge setback in the political landscape of India, with the defeat of BJP in Bihar elections. But the BJP might just be beginning to realise how far its claim to power has been threatened. His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama, the spiritual guru of Buddhists and Nobel laureate, on Saturday said that Indian Hindus have proven that they care for harmony, by defeating BJP in the recently concluded Bihar Assembly elections.
“Bihar elections show that a majority of Hindu people still believe in harmony”, Dalai Lama said. His comments have come under criticism from BJP leaders, who are saying that it was irresponsible of him to comment on this. Subramaniam Swamy, for his part, said that the Dalai Lama’s comments were uncalled for and show ignorance on his part. Meanwhile, the rival Congress and Janata Dal United parties, have hailed the spiritual guru’s comments, saying that they completely agree with him. “It is true that the Hindu community of this country is tolerant and believes in secularism”, said Congress leader Shakeel Ahmad. “There is absolutely no second thought about it. We are 100 percent in agreement with the statement of the Dalai Lama”, he added. While answering a question on religious intolerance in India, the Tibetan spiritual leader had said,”India has a long tradition of peace and amity. The people of Bihar in the recent Assembly polls have proved that a large section of the Hindu community still believes in peace and amity.”
