A day after the Delhi Chief Minister was slapped during her Jan Sunwai, Rekha Gupta was granted ‘Z’ plus  category security. The chief minister was “slapped” and her “hair was pulled” before security overpowered the attacker, a claim which was later refuted by Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva.

However, BJP’s Kapil Mishra alleged that the attack on Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was carried out in a “planned manner” as part of a “well-planned conspiracy”, adding that the accused is a “professional criminal” with a history of serious offences.

The minister claimed the accused has nine criminal cases registered against him, including charges of attempt to murder and smuggling.

The Chief Minister was on Wednesday slapped by a man named Rajesh Khimji, who belongs to Rajkot, Gujarat. Delhi Police reached out to his family, and his mother, Bhanu, has told the media that Rajesh is a dog lover and was upset over the Supreme Court’s recent ruling to round up stray dogs in Delhi NCR and shift them to shelters.

What will change?

Police said this is to ensure that such incidents are not repeated and security protocols are strengthened during interactions between the chief minister and the public.

“Complainants will not be allowed to directly approach the chief minister during ‘Jan Sunwai’ sessions. Every complaint will first undergo verification before being placed before CM Rekha Gupta,” a police source said.
