Updated: March 12, 2017, 9:02 PM IST

Dehradun, March 12: The curtain has raised on whom the masses of Uttarakhand have chosen to rule the state for the next five years. The fate of Congress’s Harish Rawat was decided on Saturday. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won big in Uttarakhand as well, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi having lead a high-decibel campaign in the state as well. Three of the state’s key constituencies are Kedarnath, Dehra dun and Ranikhet and in Kedarnath and Ranikhet especially, the popularity of Harish Rawat was put to test.

Kedarnath was one of the worst hit areas of Uttarakhand in 2013 when massive floods wrecked the state and also lead to landslides. The reconstruction and rehabilitation work of those who were affected by the floods is still going on, but Rawat has claimed that he has done enough work to ensure smooth Yatras for pilgrims. This is the first time that the state goes to poll after the floods and it will be the litmus test of Rawat’s work. The sitting MLA Shailarani Rawat had defected from Congress to join the BJP, the support for which has been steadily growing in the state. ALSO READ: Uttarakhand Assembly Election 2017 Results: BJP’s Rajesh Shukla to take on CM Harish Rawat from Kichcha Constituency

In Ranikhet, there’s Ajay Bhatt, who’s the most prominent face in Uttarakhand politics and he belongs to the BJP. He is the leader of Opposition in the state Assembly and is also the BJP state president. Contesting from Congress and against Bhatt is Rawat’s close relative Karan Mahara. From Dehra dun, Congress has fielded Suryakant Dhasmana and from BJP, Harbansh Kapoor has been fielded for the election. It remains to be seen if Rawat has the kind of influence and relevance still in the state, to be able to get the numbers that he has been so confidently claiming to get.
