New Delhi, August 19: Around 1,066 cases of swine flu has been detected in Delhi last month, which is more than four times the number reported during the rest of this year. Till August 13, the total number of cases stands at 1,307, more than six times the corresponding period of 2016.
Across India, around 18,855 cases of the swine flu have been reported, claiming lives of 929 patients. But some reports suggest that despite the spurt in cases in the capital, the number of deaths has not risen significantly.
Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Jain while addressing the assembly said, “Only four deaths have been reported. Two patients were from Delhi and two from outside”.
In a review meeting held on Friday, officials from Delhi health department said their counterparts in the Centre that the city has sufficient training and stocks of medicines to tackle the cases of swine flu.
Health experts said there was no cause for panic over the sudden spurt in swine flu in Delhi. “If any patient is facing normal viral infection they must not panic. The high-risk groups include people with heart diseases, diabetics and kidney patients, senior citizen’s, pregnant women and children below eight years of age. These patients need special treatment,” a doctor in Delhi reportedly said.
Several doctors in Delhi have also started training other doctors to handle swine flu cases with efficiency. Jain in the assembly said that the government had enough stocks of medicines and vaccines to tackle the outbreak.
The Health Minister said that in Delhi adequate facilities for treatment are available. The Health Minister said that there were reserved beds for patients in government hospitals and not even 5 per cent of these beds have been occupied.
In Delhi, the spike in the cases at this time of the year has come as a surprise as swine flu usually peaks in the post monsoon and early winter. Health conscious people have started maintaining caution when they are in public places because of the HINI virus, which later causes swine flu, transmits from human to human.
