New Delhi: The national capital woke up with a thick layer of smog and fog on Saturday morning as the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi slipped back into the ‘Severe’ category. At 8 AM, the AQI stood at 420, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The AQI in Anand Vihar reached 457, Ashok Vihar 455, Chandni Chowk 439, and RK Puram 421, all falling under the “severe” category, according to CPCB data at 8 a.m.
An AQI of 0-50 is categorized as good, 51-100 as satisfactory, 101-200 as moderate, 201-300 as poor, 301-400 as very poor, and 401-500 as severe. Anything above 500 falls under the severe-plus category. Meanwhile, low visibility caused significant train delays, including the Shaabi Express (39 minutes), Jansardhan Express (661 minutes), Hazrat Nizamuddin Humsafar Express (110 minutes), and Runicha Express (24 minutes).
The Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai on November 22 visited the Narela-Singhu border to monitor the enforcement of Stage IV of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). This stage imposes a ban on Delhi-registered BS-IV and older diesel-operated medium goods vehicles (MGVs) and heavy goods vehicles (HGVs), excluding those used for essential services.
Addressing the media, Rai emphasized the AAP government’s continued efforts to tackle air pollution and ensure compliance with anti-pollution measures in the city. “The AAP government is continuously working to mitigate the level of pollution in Delhi. Entry has been banned for those vehicles that cause pollution, as Grap 4 is implemented. Today, we have received several complaints that vehicles are being allowed to enter Delhi without proper checking; hence I am here to inspect the same,” said Gopal Rai. Delhi has been struggling with extremely poor air quality and persistent thick smog over the past few weeks.
