New CCTV footage has surfaced showing the white Hyundai i20 that exploded near Delhi’s Red Fort on Monday evening, killing nine people and injuring 20 others. According to officials, the vehicle, bearing registration number HR26CE7674 was parked near the historic monument for more than three hours before the deadly blast. The car entered the parking area near Sunehri Masjid at around 3:19 p.m. and exited at approximately 6:30 p.m. The footage reportedly captures the image of Dr. Mohammad Umar, a suspected terrorist linked to the Faridabad terror module who has been on the run.
The high-intensity explosion occurred during peak evening hours when the Red Fort area, a major tourist hub, was teeming with visitors.
In the CCTV footage, the driver’s face is initially visible, but moments later, a masked man appears behind the wheel as the vehicle moves forward.
According to Delhi Police’s Special Cell, investigators have partially reconstructed the car’s route using surveillance footage. The Hyundai i20 was last traced entering Delhi through the Badarpur border, and authorities are now working to piece together the remaining leg of its journey leading up to the explosion.
Meanwhile, another footage has emerged of the vehicle, entering and exiting the parking area. Delhi Police sources have said the suspect was alone at the time.
Investigators are now tracking the car’s route toward Daryaganj, examining over 100 CCTV recordings, including footage from toll plazas and nearby surveillance points, to reconstruct the vehicle’s full movement before the explosion.
Intelligence inputs from Jammu and Kashmir have revealed that the Hyundai i20 was originally registered to Mohammad Salman, who was arrested on Monday night. The car reportedly changed owners several times first sold to a man named Nadeem, then to a used-car dealership, Royal Car Zone in Faridabad’s Sector 37. However, all attempts to contact individuals associated with the dealership have failed, as their listed phone numbers remain switched off.
Subsequently, the vehicle was purchased by Tariq, a resident of Pulwama, and later by Mohammad Umar, both suspected of being part of the Faridabad terror network.
Authorities detained Tariq on Monday evening, shortly after the Red Fort blast, following the arrest of Dr. Muzamil Shakeel, from whom investigators recovered 2,900 kilograms of materials used to manufacture improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Intelligence officials believe Tariq is also linked to the same terror module.
As per various media reports, the events are connected suggesting that Mohammad Umar may have carried out the Red Fort explosion in panic after Muzamil’s arrest, possibly intending it as a fidayeen (suicide) attack.
Investigators also found that the same Hyundai i20 had been fined for illegal parking in Faridabad on September 20. The car’s registration certificate still bears Mohammad Salman’s name, and the ownership has not been officially transferred. Police are now piecing together the vehicle’s complete transaction history to determine whether it remained with Tariq or was sold again before the blast.
