New Delhi, May 13: The Delhi High Court while hearing a plea filed by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students and JNUSU President Kanhaiya Kumar who are sitting on a hunger strike since last 15 days, asked their student union president to call of the hunger strike. The Delhi High Court also said that it is ready to hear students plea only if they end their agitation.

The court was hearing a petition filed by Kumar and several other students in which they challenged the disciplinary action taken against them by the university based on an internal inquiry committee’s report.

The order said that the court will hear the plea only if students end their strike. The JNU students have been carrying out their agitation since February 9, and are sitting on hunger strike since last 15 days. The JNU authorities on Wednesday made a formal appeal to agitators to call of their hunger strike, saying that the matter is subjudice, news agency PTI reported. (Also Read: Kanhaiya Kumar discharged from AIIMS,JNU asks students to not invite outsiders)

Last week the varsity had formed a four-member committee to look into demands of students protesting against the punishments by JNU for involvement in the controversial February 9 event where anti-national slogans were raised at the JNU campus. However, experts believe that the panel may take a back seat against Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya who also moved High Court today against the disciplinary action taken against them by the JNU.

An internal probing committee was set up by the JNU authorities to look into the incidents that led to a major unrest and arrest of a few students after the controversial event of commemorating 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru was held at varsity campus. The panel later submitted its report of the JNU vice chancellor where they found several students, including JNU Students’ Union President Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid, and Anirban Bhattacharya guilty of misconduct and imposed fines on them. The authorities also barred students from the university for varying periods of time.
