New Delhi, April 21: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporations (DMRC) is planning to replace manual token counters with token vending machines (TVMs) at all metro stations. To reduce the workforce at stations and encourage passengers to use smart cards, DMRC is mulling over this initiative.
According to information, a DMRC official said that use of TVMs increase transparency and avoid human errors. It also takes less time. The stations where a daily sale of tokens is under 5,000, we will provide token vending machines there. Presently, the system is being reviewed at every station.
The manual sales counters had been replaced at 118 stations. Around 519 TVMs have been installed and all are operational. The first TVM was installed at Rajiv Chowk station in 2011. And almost all new upcoming stations will have TVMs. The changes will be completely depending upon the experience at the stations.
The DMRC has taken many initiatives to provide a hassle-free journey to commuters. Now, the smart card recharge/token sale facility at the TVMs through Credit/Debit cards can be done at stations. DMRC had also introduced the facility to top-up Metro smart cards by e-wallet applications such as Paytm, MobiKwik, and others. Last year, Metro also launched driverless trains on the Magenta line from Janakpuri West to Botanical Garden. It runs on Communication Based Train Control (CBCT), a state-of-the-art signaling technology.
