New Delhi: A 30-year-old Delhi Police constable suffered fatal head injuries when a car dragged him through the road in Delhi’s Nangloi area late last night, i.e. Saturday, September 28.

According to the reports, constable Sandeep was in civil clothes and was on patrolling duty on his bike. A Wagon R tried to overtake him. The car was being driven rashly and the constable asked the driver to slow down. Instead of slowing down, the car’s driver increased the speed and hit Sandeep’s bike from behind and as a result, the bike and the policeman were dragged for about 10 metres on the road.

Constable Sandeep suffered serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital from where he was referred to another hospital where he was declared dead.

The entire incident has been captured on a CCTV camera. The footage shows the slain cop gesturing to the car driver to slow down but the car races up and hits his bike.

According to police, the car had two occupants. They left the car and escaped the spot. Police have seized the vehicle and are looking for the accused. A murder case has been registered in this connection.

The cop is survived by his mother, wife and a five-year-old son.

Some sources have claimed that one of the car’s occupants was involved in the illegal liquor trade, but police have not confirmed this.

“He took a left turn and a Wagon R tried to cross him at high speed. There was probably a verbal exchange between him and the driver. When Sandeep drove on, the vehicle accelerated and hit his bike from behind. He was dragged for about 10 metres and hit another vehicle. He suffered serious head injuries,” said senior police officer Jimmy Chiram adding that Sandeep was out on patrolling duty.

Jimmy Chiram said it prima facie appears to be a case of road rage. Asked if police have identified the accused, the officer said, “We are looking for them. Once we have confirmation, we will let you know.”

The cases of road rage have witnessed an alarming rise in Delhi-NCR and these often lead to violence and injuries, and deaths.
