Mumbai: An Air India flight from Delhi to San Francisco-bound was diverted to Magadan in Russia on Tuesday after one of the engines suffered a technical glitch, the Tata Group-owned airline said in a statement. According to Air India, the flight, carrying 216 passengers and 16 crew, however, landed safely and the passengers are safe now.
“Air India flight AI173 of June 6, operating Delhi-San Francisco has developed a technical issue with one of its engines. The flight, carrying 216 passengers and 16 crew, was diverted and landed safely in Magadan airport in Russia,” Air India said in the statement.

Air India said the passengers are being provided with all support on ground and will be provided alternate options to reach their destinations at the earliest. The airline also added that the aircraft is undergoing mandatory checks on the ground.

Prior to this, one Air India flight from Chennai to Singapore was diverted to Malaysia due to bad weather and congestion in April this year. The Air India flight which took off from Chennai in Tamil Nadu later departed for Singapore as the weather improved and other flights were allowed to operate.
“Due to weather conditions and congestion in Singapore, AI346 was diverted to Malaysia. The flight is now departing for Singapore since the weather has improved and flights are allowed to operate now,” Air India had said in a statement.
Prior to this, another flydubai flight which caught fire after takeoff from Kathmandu and landed safely at Dubai International (DXB) Airport. However, the flight crew followed a standard operating procedure and continued their travel after determining that the engine was within normal operating parameters.
