Delhi Water Crisis: Amidst a severe water crisis which has crippled day to day life in the national capital, the Congress Tuesday claimed that as many as 250 water tankers have allegedly vanished from the roster of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB).
In a statement, Congress’ ‘ interim Delhi chief Devender Yadav claimed that the DJB always had 250 departmental tankers in operation during summers but those have gone “missing” this year.
Yadav alleged that this summer 100 tankers went missing wondered where those had gone.
Training guns on Delhi ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Congress’ INDIA bloc ally, Yadav said it was surprising that the DJB did not increase the number of tankers to tackle the water shortage as the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP had come to power 10 years ago on the promise of providing free power and water to Delhi residents.
Yadav claimed that the DJB had 407 tankers on contract, 541 on rent and 250 belonging to the department in 2022 to service 10,141 water shortage points of Delhi.
The Congress leader accused the Delhi government of not keeping tabs on a potential water shortage ahead of the scorching summer season and waking up to the problem at the last moment.
He claimed that the DJB does not formulate any summer action plan in advance to address the water shortage issue and when the problem gets out of hand the AAP and BJP start a mud slinging match between themselves.
“When the water scarcity gets out of control, AAP and the BJP indulge in blame games and accuse each other of complicity and laxity in tackling the shortage”, he alleged.
A severe water crisis has crippled Delhi for the past few weeks with little to no supply amid searing heatwave conditions. The ruling AAP dispensation has accused BJP-ruled Haryana of not releasing Delhi’s share of water from the Yamuna river.
Reacting to these allegations, Yadav said the Delhi government should have written to the Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh governments for the release of sufficient water to meet the city’s peak summer demand.
But yet again, the AAP government failed to do this, he claimed.
Notably, a meeting of the Upper Yamuna River Board was held on June 14 following directions from a Supreme Court bench. The meeting mulled options to release more water to Delhi to mitigate the city’s water scarcity at the earliest.
Yadav noted that water scarcity continues to plague Delhi even though the said meeting was held.
