Delhi Water Crisis Latest Update: The national capital has been experiencing record-breaking high temperatures each day and the residents are battling severe heatwave conditions. While brief rain on Friday brought a much-awaited relief for Delhiites from the scorching heat and high temperatures, the water crisis in the national capital continues to worsen. As a mark of protest against the Haryana government for allegedly not releasing Delhi’s share of water, Delhi Water Minister Atishi is sitting on an indefinite hunger strike. Supporting her from behind the bars is Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal who has wished well the AAP minister for her ‘tapasya’ and has also shared a written message, read by his wife Sunita Kejriwal.
As mentioned earlier, the water crisis in Delhi has further worsened. Long lines of people were seen queuing up on Saturday to fetch water from tankers across parts of the national capital, as the city continued to sizzle in the summer heat. Morning visuals showed people from Chilla Gaon of Mayur Vihar area, Sanjay Colony, Okhla area, and Geeta Colony area standing in queues, holding onto cans and buckets and crowding around water tankers amid water shortage in the national capital this summer. Amid soaring temperatures, these scenes have become a daily occurrence in the national capital in many areas since the start of the summer season this year.
Meanwhile, amid the political tug-of-war on the water crisis, Delhi’s Water Minister Atishi sat on an indefinite hunger strike on Friday, alleging that the Haryana government is not releasing Delhi’s share of water. She was accompanied by Aam Aadmi Party leader Sanjay Singh and other members of the party at Bhogal, near Jangpura where she sat on the hunger strike. She also paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat before leaving for Bhogal.
On her second day of the fast, Atishi said in a video, “This is the second day of my fast. There is an acute shortage of water in Delhi…Delhi receives water from its neighbouring states. Delhi receives a total of 1005 MGD of water that is supplied to the houses in Delhi. Of this, 613 MGD of water comes from Haryana but for the past several weeks, it has been releasing only 513 MGD…Due to this more than 28 lakh people in Delhi are not receiving water…I tried everything but when Haryana Government didn’t agree to supply water, I was left with no choice but to sit on a fast…Even today, the situation of water crisis persists. Yesterday, Haryana supplied 110 MGD lesser amount of water (than the designated)…I will continue my fast until Haryana Government supplies water to Delhi, until 28 lakh people of Delhi get water…”

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal’s wife Sunita Kejriwal read a message from the Chief Minister, who is under judicial custody and said Arvind Kejriwal is hurt to see Delhi’s public suffering from water scarcity. Sunita Kejriwal stated, “Kejriwal says that when I see on TV, the way Delhi people are suffering due to water scarcity, it hurts me. I hope Atishi’s ‘tapasya’ will succeed and residents of Delhi will get relief. I wish all the best to Atishi, may God protect her.”
