Dense fog in Delhi results in low visibility; trains, flights delayed

New Delhi, Dec 8: Dense fog continued to blanket Delhi and northern states of India resulting in low visibility. As per reports, 94 trains are running late and one has been cancelled. Over 16 have been rescheduled due to poor visibility as dense fog cover shrouds the national capital. As per reports, flight operations at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport have been affected. Over six International and seven domestic flights operating from Delhi’s IGI airport delayed, 1 domestic flight cancelled.

Cold waves have disrupted normal life in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Dense fog has engulfed Allahabad city that has affected train services due to low visibility. On Wednesday, at least three trains were cancelled and 81 were running late due to dense fog in Delhi. The dense fog caused several accidents in various parts of North India which includes Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana on Wednesday.

The minimum temperature in the national capital on December 2 was recorded at 11.5 degrees Celsius. North India woke up to season’s first fog was on November 30, 2016 and since then disruption of air, road and rail has taken place. As per reports, the dense fog is believed to be due to the Western disturbance (WD), which is expected to move across the western Himalayan region. Flight operations have been severely disrupted due to low visibility. In wake of this turmoil, Jaipur and Lucknow airports have been upgraded to allow planes to land to reduce pressure on Delhi airport.

To overcome problems faced by such dense fog situations, the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has announced its preparedness to ensure continuity of flight operations. As per reports by India Today, the authorities have installed 18 Runway Visual Range (RVR) devices that will help the pilots to accurately measure the visibility at various points on the runway.
