Deoband, Feb 16: Congress candidates Mavia Ali on Tuesday won the Deoband bypoll elections in Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh. According to the by-election results, Mavia Ali was elected winner by 3400 votes in the Deoband by-poll. The seat was earlier won by the Samajwadi Party (SP). The by-election was necessitated in Deoband due to demise of Samajwadi Party lawmaker Rajendra Singh Rana last year. SP fielded Meena Devi from the Deoband seat, who couldn’t retain the seat for the party.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which declared the bypoll at Deoband as fight between Hindus and Muslims, fielded former RSS Pracharak Rampal Singh Pundhir from Deoband. However, BJP’s communal agenda didn’t work for them. Congress registered victory in Deoband, a Muslim-dominated area. Around 50 per cent polling took place in the by-election to the Deoband assembly seat on February 13. The counting of votes in Bikapur and Muzaffarnagar assembly seats is under-way. The BJP is leading in Muzaffarnagar, according to current trends. The poll results are being closely watched in the three communally sensitive seats of Uttar Pradesh as it is likely to send a strong message before assembly elections in the state in 2017.
