Despite Pathankot terror attack, talks with Pakistan would not be called off: BJP

Union Minister General V K Singh made it clear that the government of India would not deter ties with Pakistan due to the militant attack by Jaish-e-Mohammed.

New Delhi, Jan 3: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Narendra Modi-government have drastically shifted their stance against Pakistan. Modi-regime which maintained the slogan – “No talks along with terror” has softened its stand as senior ministers within the government have dismissed the idea of aborting the rejuvenated engagement with the neighbouring nation.

BJP, the political arm of right-wing Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), was known for demanding the abortion of talks with Pakistan immediately following a terror attack during the erstwhile rule of Congress-led UPA. However, in power, it has surprisingly changed its position by dismissing the idea of breaking ties with Islamabad. (ALSO READ: Pathankot Air Force Base terror attack live news updates)

Union Minister General V K Singh made it clear that the government of India would not deter ties with Pakistan based upon the militant attack Jaish-e-Mohammed. “Non-state actors are committed to vitiate the peace process initiated between the two nation. The ordinary people of Pakistan welcomed Modi ji. There is need for Indo-Pak engagement. However, it is also necessary that the civilian government of Pakistan cracks down on the extremist forces,” he said.

BJP spokesperson Siddharth Nath Singh described the terror attack as a planned effort to derail the revamped bilateral ties between the two nations. “We have to take the decision. Would we allow the enemies of humanity to vitiate the peace atmosphere? We have taken the resolve to further the peace agenda of Pakistan. Talks will not be called off,” he said.
