DGCA Tells Airlines to Carry Equal Number of Hindi and English Newspapers on Board Aircraft

New Delhi, July 26: Lalit Gupta, the Joint Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has instructed airlines to carry equal number of English and Hindi newspapers and magazines on board flights. He also said that airlines are seen carrying very few Hindi newspapers, which goes against the official language policy of the Indian union.

“It has been seen Indian aircraft don’t carry Hindi newspapers and magazines or carry them in limited numbers. This goes against the official language policy of Indian union. Please ensure aircraft carry equal number of Hindi and English newspapers,” Gupta told the airlines. in a letter.

The language issue comes days after the food issue on board airlines. Air India had last month announced that it would serve only vegetarian food on board short distance domestic flights. The national carrier was cornered by competing airlines like Air Vistara, that took the food war to Twitter.

This language advisory also comes days after former Union Minister and now Vice Presidential candidate Venkaiah Naidu called Hindi the official language of India and said that too much importance was being given to English. “Hindi is our rashtra bhasha [national language], our identity. We should be proud of it,” Naidu had said at an event in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, last month. “It’s very unfortunate that we are obsessed with English,” he had said.
