Chennai: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) newly elected president MK Stalin’s mother and wife of late DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi who died earlier this month who had been hospitalised has been discharged. As per PTI, Dayalu Ammal has been admitted to Apollo Hospitals in Chennai. As per reports, Ammal was hospitalised late Tuesday night. Doctors were likely to give an update on her health yesterday. Ammal has been suffering from Alzheimer’s and other age-related diseases for several years. Dr P Gopal of Bangalore’s NIMHANS (National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences) who has been treating Ammal for the past three decades said, “In 2012, it was noticed that she was suffering from behavioural changes and experts were called in and investigations proved that she was suffering from Alzheimer’s. Dayalu’s mental condition was highlighted when in 2015, Dayalu and 18 others, including DMK MP Kanimozhi and former Telecom Minister A Raja, faced a trial in a case in which Enforcement Directorate (ED) had alleged that Rs 200 crore was given illegally to Kalaignar TV through an indirect way by promoters of Swan Telecom Pvt Ltd (STPL). However, two years later, in the year 2017, Dayalu along with the other accused were acquitted in the money laundering case by a special court of CBI, given the fact that Dayalu was suffering from Alzheimer’s. Born in Tamil Nadu, Ammal got married to Karunanidhi in 1946 when she was just 12-years-old.
