New Delhi, July 8: Former Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha on Saturday expressed disappointment over his son Jayant Sinha’s action of felicitating convicts of Ramgarh lynching case. After being trolled on social media, the former BJP leader said, “Earlier I was the Nalayak Baap of a Layak Beta. Now the roles are reversed. That is twitter. I do not approve of my son’s action. But I know even this will lead to further abuse. You can never win.” However, this is not the first time the father son-duo have disagreed in public. Last year, Jayant Sinha had countered his father over the issue of Demonetisation, GST.
Notably, Jayant Sinha landed himself in trouble after his pictures felicitating and garlanding eight accused in the Ramgarh lynching case went viral on social media. The Minister of State for Civil Aviation had welcomed the eight men at his residence after their release on bail.

The opposition parties had slammed Sinha for honouring the lynching convicts. Condemning Sinha’s action, the Congress attacked the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and accused it of fanning communal tension. “It is only in ‘New India’, where those who are supposed to get the noose are instead being garlanded,” the grand old party said in a tweet.
Besides Congress, Sitaram Yechury, CPM general secretary also hit out at the BJP for “tearing India’s social fabric” and promoting politics of hate.
Jayant Sinha Clarifies
After facing flak, he (Jayant Sinha) defended his actions saying that his comments were taken out of proportion and all he was doing was “honouring the due process of law”. In a series of tweets, he said that the Hon’ble Ranchi High Court suspended the sentences and released them on bail.
“In the Ramgarh case, the Hon’ble Ranchi High Court, which is the first court of appeal, has suspended the sentence of the accused and released them on bail while admitting their case. The case will once again be re-heard,” he said, adding, “I have repeatedly expressed my misgivings about the Fast-Track Court judgment sentencing each accused to life imprisonment.”
“I am pleased that the Hon’ble High Court will hear the matter as a statutory court of appeal to test the correctness of the Fast-Track Court order. Unfortunately, irresponsible statements are being made about my actions when all that I am doing is honouring the due process of law. Those that are innocent will be spared and the guilty will be appropriately punished,” Sinha asserted.
Furthermore, the minister added that he “unequivocally condemn all acts of violence and reject any type of vigilantism”.“Any unlawful acts, particularly those that violate the rights of any citizen, should be punished with the full force of the law.”
About Ramgarh Lynching:
On June 29, 2017, a group of people had lynched Alimuddin Ansari, 40, in Bazaar Tand locality of Ramgarh town, on the suspicion that he was carrying beef in his car. A total of 11 men, including a local BJP leader, were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in connection with the case. However, the high court suspended their life sentences. They were released from the Jai Prakash Narain Central Jail and headed straight to the minister’s residence where they were garlanded and welcomed in.
