Earthquake breaking: 5.3 magnitude earthquake shakes Kolkata, people rush for safety

A 5.3 magnitude earthquake jolted Kolkata, causing people to rush out of buildings in fear. The sudden tremors created panic across the city, though no immediate reports of damage or injuries have surfaced.

This follows after a powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake hit Nepal early on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at 1:05 AM UTC (6:35 AM local time). The epicenter was 93 kilometers northeast of Lobuche in the Himalayan region, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Nepal, located in a geologically active area where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, frequently experiences earthquakes due to this tectonic activity.

The tremors were felt in several Indian states, including Delhi-NCR, West Bengal, Bihar, and Assam. In Bihar, many people rushed out of their homes in panic. Fortunately, no damage to property has been reported so far.
