New Delhi: An earthquake of magnitude 4.8 on the Richter scale hit Nicobar Islands during wee hours on Thursday. No reports of casualties or injuries were received till the time of filing this report. “Earthquake of Magnitude:6.0, Occurred on:17-01-2019, 08:23:07 IST, Lat:7.6 N & Long: 94.5 E, Depth: 84 Km, Region:Nicobar Islands Region,” the India Meteorological Department (IMD) tweeted.

No tsunami warning was issued, and no casualties or injuries were reported. There were no reports of aftershocks either.

In June last year, the region was hit by an earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale. The epicentre of the quake, which occurred at 1:59 am, was at a depth of 10km, the Indian Meteorological Department had revealed.
