New Delhi: Counting is underway for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi elections. There are 272 wards spread over North Delhi Municipal Corporation, South Delhi Municipal Corporation and East Delhi Municipal Corporation.

The EDMC has least number of wards – 64 and spread across important constituencies of Gandhi Nagar, Laxmi Nagar, Patparganj, Krishna Nagar.

The elections are a litmus test for the Aam Aadmi Party which came to power in the national capital with a thumping majority. The party campaigned across the length and breadth of Delhi highlighting the achievements of the Arvind Kejriwal government.

Apart from AAP, Swaraj India led by Yogendra Yadav is making a debut in this election. In yellow colour attire and whistle symbol, Swaraj Indian candidates and volunteers vowed to expose all the three parties.

Ahead of the elections, rift widened in the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) as senior leaders Arvinder Singh Lovely, Amrish Singh Gautam joined the BJP. The Congress’s mantle now lies on the shoulders of DPCC President Ajay Maken and the outcome will decide his position in the party.

The BJP which is facing anti-incumbency, corruption, mismanagement charges is trying hard to get the third term in the corporation. BJP is being led by party MP Manoj Tiwari, a move aimed to woo Purvanchal voters.

In 2012, it was a straight contest between the Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress in the MCD. The BJP won 35 wards, Congress 19 and others 10 in 2012 EDMC elections.

With the exit polls predicting a clean sweep by the BJP in MCD elections, the party had said that they will win at least 215 of the 272 wards.

As many as 71,39,994 votes were polled in the contest that had the BJP, the Congress and the AAP engaged in a fierce battle. The municipal polls saw a voter turnout of 53.58 per cent that surpassed the 2012 figure of 53.43.

The erstwhile unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi was trifurcated in 2012 into North, South and East Municipal Corporation.

The BJP has been ruling the MCD for the last 10 years since 2007.
