New Delhi, May 22: Controversies, rumours and blessings go hand in hand for the former Delhi Commissioner of Police B S Bassi. After the JNU row, where students’ union president Kanhaiya Kumar and others were booked allegedly for sedition charges, and continuous rift with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Bassi’s appointment as CIC chief washed away. Now, there is a new speculation that if everything goes right, Bassi would be appointed as the next Uttarakhand Governor.

Given the conditions and his performance in Delhi as the police commissioner, the appointment of Bassi would be like a surprise for a large section of people from the political and academic front who have been opposing the alleged autocratic and adamant working style since last couple of years. Be it Aam Aadmi Party convenor Arvind Kejriwal or academicians from JNU or DU, all have been raising their voice against his behaviour. Remembering the old times when Kejriwal and co. were fighting for the Jan Lokpal Bill and had asked the Centre and the Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung to transfer Delhi Police under Delhi Government jurisdiction, there was a big tension in the national capital, which also gave birth to the a big drama. However, Centre under the leadership of Narendra Modi did not agree to it. As time passed, and centre was planning to appoint Bassi as CIC chief, again the controversy kicked-off on the way Delhi Police handled JNU issue and Bassi ultimately retired bare handed.

But, when we look at Bassi’s old records and awards, the data explains him to be a marvellous cop who maintained law and order at supreme level with utmost dignity. As per the details, before being appointed as Delhi police commissioner, Bassi has been honoured with President’s Police Medal for distinguished service and the Police Medal for meritorious service. He successfully handled the Mandal agitation of 1990 and played a key role in maintaining the law and order situation during the BJP veteran L K Advani’s Rath Yatra, just before the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1996. Also, additively he took care of the Delhi police personnel and ensured that they get 5,000-flat residential complex at Dhirpur — meant for Delhi Police constables and head constables.

But, again with one retired IPS Kiran Bedi being appointed as Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry, the speculative news of Bassi taking charge of trouble-torn Uttarakhand state comes as a surprise. However, it would be matter of a day or two when we get to know about the reality behind the news, but somewhere appointing Bassi might add another chapter of controversy in his career.
